Most of the lower body exercises don't engage the calves as much compared to other muscle groups. In order to strengthen the muscle group, calf raises are necessary to perform. A high volume is recommended to fully work the muscle.
The movement is simple and should be done without any trouble whatsoever. It's popular to stand on a short surface to achieve a wider range of motion, but it isn't completely necessary. This can be done with or without weights in hand.
The variations of calf raises only change the comfort of the exercise. The normal weighted version requires the weights to be held, this other version loads the weight onto a machine instead.
Find a Seated Calf Raise machine. Load an appropriate amount of weight on the machine. Lift the heels from the bottom position. Return to the bottom.
